It suggests an innovative method of arriving at a diagnosis in the skeleton by applying what are referred to as ?operational definitions.? The aim is to ensure that all those who study bones will use the same criteria for diagnosing disease, which will enable valid comparisons to be made between studies. This book is based on modern clinical knowledge and provides background information so that those who read will understand the natural history of bone diseases, and this will enable them to draw reliable conclusions from their observations. Details of bone metabolism and the fundamentals of basic pathology are also provided, as well as a comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography. A short chapter on epidemiology provides information on how best to analyze and present the results of a study of human remains. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Professor Tony Waldron teaches palaeopathology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. The author of about 300 peer-reviewed papers in medical, scientific, and archaeology journals, as well as books on occupational medicine and palaeoepidemiology, he is co-founder of the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology and served as co-editor for its first decade. The paper includes a comprehensive morphological cladistic analysis supporting a sister group relationship between humans/hominids and orangutans (although it does not include either Sahelanthropus or Ardipithecus as hominids - there just isn't any real evidence). The paper demonstrates morphological congruence between the living and the fossil record, and also includes a section outlining various problematic aspects of molecular analysis that give reasons why the molecular result can, at least sometimes, give the wrong result, even if from different 'genes' and using LOTS of base pairs. I've also received an email from a colleague of Clara's who responded to the original email and quickly determined that whoever has access to the email account is NOT Clara. Not to mention it was too absurd to believe anyway. Not only is there a big email scam centered in Nigeria but, for some of us doing work in Africa, our email addresses are?obtained by acquaintances of people involved in conservation work or they themselves are involved one way or the other and they ask for assistance with travel expenses, education etc. Rick Murphy -----Original Message----- From: Matt Hoffman To: primate-science@primate.wisc.edu Sent: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 11:09 am Subject: [PS] "emergency appeal!" email Folks, a number of people might have gotten an email apparently from primatologist Clara Jones over the weekend, stating that she is stranded in Nigeria and asking that a sum of money be wired to her so she can return to the US.? ? While I haven't gotten direct confirmation from Clara that this email is false, the text in the body of the email directly matches a well-known "Emergency appeal!!" email scam (http://www.topix.com/forum/world/nigeria/T0ITDNSI1D1U9EKOO). I've also received an email from a colleague of Clara's who responded to the original email and quickly determined that whoever has access to the email account is NOT Clara.? ? As always, use caution when receiving unexpected emails such as this. Often a quick Google search on words/phrases from the message can confirm if a suspicious email is a known scam.? ? thanks? ? Since 2002 it has been our pleasure and privilege to take what was started in 1987 by gorilla keepers at the Columbus Zoo and turn it into what we believe is a world-class resource. But the difficult economy we are faced with today, means we cannot afford the $5,000* it costs to print/mail/produce the Gorilla Gazette. Last year we asked for help and subscriptions and we received less than $100. *Based on actual costs for the 2008 GG. No zoo or individual seems willing to help offset the costs, and so Beth Armstrong, one of the Editors and originators of the GG said: "if Gorilla Haven can't afford any printing at all, then I think it is time to look elsewhere. ... Why would a zoo pay for the funding (of the GG) and then not have the creative license/process of putting it together, doesn't make sense to me." The Gorilla Gazette has also been available online since 2002 (including archives to 1987), in our efforts to go green. With hundreds of subscribers to the E-GG online, however, last year's issue was only accessed by approximately 25% of the people, which we believe was because they were reading the printed copies sent to all gorilla holding zoos/sanctuaries/research centers OR perhaps there is another reason....??? Gorilla Haven is in the process of re-vamping our website, so access to the E-Gorilla Gazette will soon be removed from our website. I've loved putting the Gorilla Gazette together and if we were the gazillionaires people think we are and if we could afford to keep paying for everything forever, I would do it till I dropped. But we can't afford the price and are deferring to Beth, and letting someone else take over the next generation of the Gorilla Gazette. We wish them all the best. Any questions/comments about the Gorilla Gazette past or future should be directed to Beth at elynn57@aol.com Thank you.
