Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron To: gorillakeepers@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 12:45 PM Subject: [gorillakeepers] Eye Problems in Gorillas Hey everyone! At the North Carolina Zoo, one of our females, Hope, has been experiencing some eye problems. There have been several occurrences where when we arrive in the morning, she appears to have trouble seeing. She clenches her eyes very tight, her eye lids sometimes have crust around them, and she walks around holding as if she were blind (feeling around on the ground to get from room to room, bumping into things, etc.). It usually takes her 15 to 20 minutes to finally open her eyes, and when she does, her eyes are inflamed and completely blood shot. We are completely stumped as to what might be causing this, but we have come up with a variety of options. Many of those options are shots in the dark at this point, but I am posting this message to see if anyone has seen this problem with any of their gorillas or maybe something similar. We haven't changed anything since a few months before she started having these eye problems. She has received a 3 day dose of Benedryl, but her symptoms remained. When the vets prescribed Meloxicam, it seems to help clear it up. Our ideas for the possible culprit: laundry detergent (it's the same detergent that we have used for at least the last few years, but we have switched to baby laundry detergent Dreft), allergic reaction to something on exhibit (haven't changed anything on exhibit), or diabetes (her sugar levels were normal from her most recent procedure from 2 weeks ago). Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. She was also in the Biju group, if I remember right, and her arm may have been hurt again during some of the "introductions" ... There must be a lot of literature about broken bones in gorillas, so I've copied this to two other e-groups (Primate Science and Zoo Biology) where more information may be forthcoming. I also recall a time at a zoo (I won't mention) where a juvenile hurt his arm and they thought it was broken, but instead of trying to put it in a cast, they just left it alone, letting Mother Nature do Her thing .... the juvenile in question is now a silverback with no sign of a problem with the arm - keepers didn't even remember the incident, which I have on my video ... She is writing a paper on the treatment of arm fractures in gorillas for the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science. Akiko is seeking information on the treatment of such fractures for inclusion in the article including copies of published papers on this subject (or citations to them). Her e-mail to me requesting assistance in obtaining such information appears below. If would greatly appreciate it if any of you who have information on how gorillas with arm fractures were treated could forward that information to Akiko at ailuropodajp@yahoo.co.jp, or to me at evelynhreis@verizon.net. Thanks for your help. Evelyn From: Akiko Hayashida Subject: Akiko from Japan To: sweetiebird1@verizon.net Date: Monday, January 19, 2009, 3:45 AM Dear Evelyn Now I am staying the Museum of Tokyo University. And I am trying to write paper about treatment of arm fracture in western lowland gorilla. This gorilla was female and died about 40 years old. Under the keeping at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo about 10 years ago, her right arm was broken in an accident. But this arm recovered. And she died in 2007 for cancer. Our museum sometimes was donated dead body from Zoo. And we got a oppotunity to dissect her arm. This gorilla is very famous in this zoo. So I took only one information of gorilla, but we will try to make note of the J. veterinary medical science in nearly feature. If you couldn't search any paper about arm surgery in gorilla, I hope to be successful for my paper. I am sorry that my letter is not so good. I hope you can understand my message. I was so happy to receive your kindness mail. Best wishes Akiko P.S. I have just found the gorilla report about 'Ndjia' at San Diego Wild Animal Park. This gorilla born at this park on Dec. 31, 1994. And when he was 3 years old, his left leg was wrong and was operated. This report was wrote by Catharine Bell. And in this paper, I could see some name. Dr.Jim Oosterhuis, Jeff Zuba (Veterinarians), Barbara Kurtz, Jeanette Fuller(Animal health technician), Jeff Fuller(hospital keeper) Do you have some informations about this gorilla and staff? Message-ID: <589955.76310.qm@web54103.mail.re2.yahoo.com> (posted on behalf of the Monkey Sanctuary Trust) Dear All, At the IPS conference in Edinburgh last August, several papers were presented (T. Capaldo; H.R. Ferdowsian et al), which detailed the diagnosis of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other disorders (according to the DSM-IV) in captive ex-laboratory chimpanzees. The Monkey Sanctuary Trust is curently home to 11 capuchin monkeys (amongst others), most of whom were kept as pets before their arrival here. They display a range of abnormal behaviours, many of which have become less prevalent during their time with us, but many of which can still be seen regularly. The Trust would like to invite proposals from psychologists or primatologists with a psychology background who are interested in conducting a study similar to the chimpanzee studies mentioned above. Room and board may be available during data collection, but unfortunately no further support will be available. Anyone interested, please contact me privately at brooke_aldrich@monkeysanctuary.org.
