Good luck to you! Best regards, Jane Dewar Founder, Gorilla Haven ----- Original Message ----- From: Alan Morris To: jdewar@gorilla-haven.org Cc: Carrie CLARKE Sent: Friday, July 31, 2009 7:12 AM Subject: radiographs of ape wrists Gorilla Haven P.O. Box 210 Morganton, GA 30560, USA Dear Sir/Madam, I am currently supervising an Honours project in my Department at the University of Cape Town. The project involves the anatomical structure of the wrist joint in humans and apes with specific reference to a little known bone in the wrist called the ?os daubentonia?. The structure seems to be a stabiliser of the wrist and is occasionally present in humans, but is said to be normal anatomy in some species of apes. Almost no research has been done on the ?os daubentonia?, so this work is in essence breaking new ground. We have access to hundreds of radiographs of human wrists, but we are struggling to obtain X-rays of ape joints. Do you know if any of the apes under your care have had their arms and hands radiographed and if so, would it be possible to obtain a copy of these images? I do realise that your organisation is not an academic institute, but access to these images would be extremely valuable to us and your co-operation would be greatly appreciated. We are interested in all of the great apes as well as the gibbons if possible. Although this project is tightly focussed, we hope that the project will shed some light on the nature of the differences in the mobility of the wrist in humans in comparison to apes and tell us something about how evolution has shaped the joint in two very different forms of primate locomotion. I hope that you will be able to help us as it is critical that we locate information on both apes and humans. Thanking you in advance for your help in this matter. Alan Morris Professor A.G.
